Spring cleaning around a house is dirty work, but the rewards of it are worth the effort. Here are my tips for spring cleaning kitchen cabinets and kitchen appliances.
Disclosure: Some products used to organize and clean my kitchen were provided to me, free of charge, by OXO. I will not be monetarily compensated, but am writing this post in exchange for the products. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
So, brutal honesty here: I am not a fan of cleaning.
Wait, let me rephrase that.
I love the look of my apartment when it’s clean, but I suck gumballs at organizing it enough to actually get it clean. There is just too much clutter in the way. To make things more frustrating, I have a galley-style kitchen with virtually no counter space, and even less cabinet space. There are only 3 sets of cabinets. Well, three and a half, counting the small space above the oven hood.
One set of cabinets stores the plates, bowls, and all of that jazz. The second set is for dry goods like cereals, pasta, rice, and canned foods. And because I’m a food blogger who bakes, the third set of cabinets stores my baking ingredients and spices. That set of cabinets is the worst, organizationally speaking. There are SO. MANY. INGREDIENTS.
Stuffed inside of the cabinet shown above are six different types of plain chocolate chips. SIX! Unsweetened, 80% bittersweet, 65% bittersweet, semi-sweet, milk chocolate, and bittersweet mini chips. Plus every sprinkle known to man, candied ginger, flavored chips, and too many other things to mention. And that’s just inside half of one set of the cabinets. The spice cabinet is a nightmare. I can never find anything in there when I need it, so I have multiples of just about every spice.
So naturally, when OXO reached out to see if I’d be interested in spring cleaning my kitchen with their products, I was excited, and even a tad enthusiastic to clean. The OXO 10-piece Pop Container Set blew my cabinets into ship shape in no time flat.
That long, red thing in the photo above is the OXO Microfiber Under Appliance Duster. It’s magical at removing dirt and dust bunnies, or in my case, dust monsters, from places that ordinary microfiber dusters won’t fit into. The other item OXO sent to me is a kitchen appliance cleaning set.
My first project was organizing the cabinets. Because of my limited cabinet space, I previously stored my baking staples like sugars, flours, and leavening agents on metal shelving in a coat closet next to the front door. Blergh. #paininthebutt
Here’s what my baking cabinets looked like after a bit of spring cleaning help from the OXO Pop containers:
Erasable food storage labels work really well on them, because I can easily change the labels if I decide to use the containers for something else.
I went through my spices, tossing any that were more than six months old. Surprise, surprise… I went from sixteen bottles of spices to six. After I bought fresh spices, I placed them into a magnetic spice rack on the side of the fridge, to the left of the cabinets.
After using the kitchen appliance cleaning set to remove the grime from my fridge, I used the microfiber duster to grab the grossness from the space next to the counter and under the fridge. Ew. I took a photo of what was captured from underneath the fridge. I was going to post it, but it seriously grossed me out so badly that I changed my mind. Just trust me when I say that you need this tool in your life. After removing the gunk from underneath, my fridge stopped making weird humming noises. And within two days, it actually felt cooler inside the fridge!
Here’s a rundown of the OXO products that helped me with spring cleaning of my kitchen cabinets and appliances.
OXO POP Containers :
Stackable and space-efficient, POP Containers are designed for modular use, so you can organize in any number of height combinations to fit your countertop and pantry. A push-button mechanism creates an airtight seal to help keep out bugs and ants.
OXO Under Appliance Microfiber Duster :
The duster really impresses me! It has a long, flat profile to go where other dusters don’t, around and underneath appliances and cabinets. The long, fluffy fibers conform to uneven surfaces to capture dust bunnies, or in my case, dust monsters.
Thankfully, the head is removable and machine washable, because after a run under my fridge, I was majorly grossed out by the filth it had accumulated.
OXO Kitchen Appliance Cleaning Set :
The appliance cleaning set has durable nylon brushes and scrapers. It gets into the tight spaces of kitchen fixtures to remove gunky, unsightly buildup.
I couldn’t get a good photo, but I used it to remove the grime from between the back of the sink and the back splash. Oh, and with a little orange essential oil on the bristles, I was able to get the grease removed from the hood of my stove!
My kitchen has never been so organized before. I’m actually enjoying baking again, too. Thanks, OXO!
