Just about a year ago, my food blogging took on a new level of pressure as I turned it from a hobby into a full time business. It took a giant leap of faith for me to make that decision, and it took a lot of organization, too. Even though I had worked in administrative jobs for much of my adult life, I wasn’t at all prepared to juggle the day to day routine of wife, homemaker, and business owner, all from one very small home office.
Early on, I learned how to stay organized working from home the hard way, by missing appointments, overbooking myself with clients, and with piles of dirty laundry and dishes because I had more work than available hours in my day to do it. I was determined to make my new business work, so I got my act together, headed to Staples for some home office products, and started using some simple organizational tools to help me stay organized working from home.
I sometimes feel that my entire life is in my purse… and my purse is very often a giant black hole where my life can disappear if I’m not careful! I carry a simple day calendar in my purse to help keep track of items on my to-do list, as well as reminders to pay bills, pick up items from the cleaners, and reminders for my fitness classes.
The Sharpie fine point pens are perfect for using in small space calendars, and I love that they come in a variety of colors, too.
BONUS: Sharpie fine and Ultra Fine markers and highlighters are on sale at Staples right now, while supplies last. Grab a few packages and stock up for yourself, or share them with your favorite college student.
Dry Board Wall Calendar
I love the calendar on my phone and couldn’t function without it, but having a visual aid to help me remember important events is important, too. To help me stay organized working from home, I use a different color marker for each area of importance on my wall calendar. It helps me know at a glance whether an appointment or task is personal, business, or home related. It only took two over due bills to cause grief with the credit bureaus… don’t let that happen to you! I use Sharpie pens to mark up sticky notes for the super duper important tasks. Double duty reminders, for the win!
In the Kitchen
My Sharpie products are great for use in my home office, but they’re awesome in the kitchen, too.
When I was in culinary school, we learned about the importance of using food labels for food identification and contamination prevention. I use Sharpie permanent markers to help me with that task. I save money by purchasing meat and grains in bulk, bagging, tagging, then popping the bags into the freezer. It helps save me precious time not having to grocery shop every week.
I’ve been using Sharpie highlighters for as far back as I can remember. Why? While I’m all about trying to stay organized working from home, I’m also all about stylin’ with Sharpie!
My current favorite use for those bright colors is to highlight my favorite Bible verses. Technically, that has nothing to do with how to stay organized working from home, but if you ask me, without God, I’d be nowhere! Besides, what’s more fun that having a highlighter in every color of the rainbow?!
